As the budget rolls out and we await the news about the final shape of the Advanced Technology Public Research Organisation, Professors Nicola Gaston and Frédérique Vanholsbeeck, the directors of the two Centre of Research Excellence in the physical sciences, wrote an OpEd for News Room.
Gaston and Vanholsbeeck discuss what the current climate showcases with Government Investments in Science, but also the losses faced in GDP growth for New Zealand as a result of continued underinvestment.
With the newly established Science System Advisory Group , Gaston and Vanholsbeeck provide insights on the opportunities that could be provided by including expertise in areas of advanced technology that could greatly benefit New Zealand to guide its research systems and maintain global competitiveness.
"If our system is indeed held back by outdated settings, surely the update to those settings should be aligned with our national ambitions for our science system."
