Calling New Zealand’s next cohort of leaders in photonic and quantum technologies

Te Whai Ao — Dodd-Walls Centre has grown and matured since gaining Centre of Research Excellence status in 2015. To ensure we remain dynamic and the science we cover is relevant to our mission and strategy, it’s crucial that we appoint new investigators. Right now we’re making a call for new Associate Investigators.

It’s a really exciting time to be working in photonic and quantum technologies with governments investing billions in photonics as well as quantum computing, communications and sensing. This is an opportunity to pursue your passion and fulfil your curious mind.  Everyone appointed as an Investigator actively supports and implements the vision and mission of the Dodd-Walls Centre and contributes to our research programme. That means Associate Investigators (AIs) take an active part in shaping the programme and could receive research project funding. They’re also eligible for contestable research seed funding. AIs can sponsor PhD and Summer scholarships applicants, who they then supervise as they carry out DWC projects. AIs can apply for travel funding too.

Many investigators enjoy attending the popular annual Symposium. It’s a chance to present their research and play their part in the Centre’s culture of knowledge-sharing.  Throughout the year, AIs can also suggest speakers, nominate others to present and of course attend regular seminars arising. Being an AI also means promoting the Centre, its research and its people and there are plenty of ways to get involved.

 It is recommended that AI applicants discuss their application with members of the Science Team or Executive Committee before submission. Applications will be reviewed by the Science Team and shortlisted by the Executive Committee. All applicants will be notified of the outcome.

 Application: Submit a cover letter addressing the selection criteria, CV, publications list, and two recommendation letters (by Dodd-Walls Centre Investigators) emailed to dwc@otago.ac.nz. The application deadline will be Sunday September 13, 2026.
