Research Boost

Research Boost

The Research Boost initiative is aimed at supporting early-career and contract researchers in applying for major external funding.

About this funding

The Research Boost offers up to three months' salary (used flexibly over a longer period –typically six months) so that early-career researchers can apply for a major new grant.  The fund is targeted at the cohort of researchers in the Centre who are not permanent staff and whose income is derived from various grants and contracts, including industry partnerships.

These researchers face significant risk if they miss a grant round, potentially losing their positions. Additionally, time spent preparing grant applications can detract from current research obligations and publication output.

The Research Boost provides up to three months of salary (used flexibly over six months or up toNZ$40,000) and up to NZ$5,000 in OPEX to support the preparation of a major funding application. As at 4 November 2025 there are sixteen awards available. Successful applicants will be assigned a mentor to assist with the application.

How to access funding

Applicants must be members of the Centre, in pursuit of significant public or private grants and awards. They should be either New and Emerging Researchers (following the Marsden Fast Start definition) or postgraduate students.

Criteria

  • One-time award per applicant.
  • Must be used to prepare a major funding application.
  • No salary overheads: cost centre must accept this.
  • Requires Head of Department and Principal Investigator support.

Reporting requirements

A completed Research Boost Fund report is required and is due to be returned to the Centre six weeks after an announcement is made about the major funding application.
