11th and 12th February 2008, St Margaret's College, University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand
This year's symposium will cover the fields of ultra-cold atomic physics, quantum and atom optics, photonics, quantum information processing, biophotonics and related fields. The primary aim is to bring together the constituent parties of the Dodd-Walls Centre for Quantum Technologies and representatives from the other major Australasian groups in these areas, but there will, in addition, be representation from overseas.
The symposium carries on a tradition begun 30 years ago. In the early seventies, New Zealand began to develop an expertise in Laser Physics and Quantum Optics which by the end of last century had become of significant international standing. The “New Zealand Symposia on Laser Physics”, organised by John Harvey and the late Dan Walls developed within this tradition, and took place in 1977, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1989 and 1994. These Symposia were attended by physicists from all parts of the world, and participants always enjoyed the high standard of papers presented and the informal and relaxed atmosphere of a meeting held in the pleasant climate of a New Zealand summer.
The Dodd-Walls Centre, itself formed from scientists who have inherited the tradition, and some of whom who have been involved in the symposia and the research effort from the very beginning, began a revival with a December 2006 meeting in Auckland University. The 2008 meeting—the eighth such New Zealand Symposium--will carry on the tradition.
